ANNECY-LE GRAND-BORNAND: biathlon finds its French home...

In the early 2000s, French biathlon gained international recognition, the only thing missing being a major organization. Since the 1992 Albertville Olympic Games, no major world-class competition had been held on French soil, with the exception of the 2004 Junior World Championships in Haute-Maurienne and the 1995 European Championships in Le Grand-Bornand.
Métabief, Bessans, Autrans, Chamonix and Le Grand-Bornand bid for a world cup. After careful consideration, the French Ski Federation chose Le Grand-Bornand on November 24, 2007, thus confirming the advantages of a site that was also part of Annecy’s bid for the 2018 Olympic Games.
The IBU approved the French bid, and the French Ski Federation entrusted Annecy-Le Grand-Bornand with the organization of six World Cup races in December 2013, 2017, 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2024. The beautiful story continues this year, in 2025…while waiting for 2026 and 2030.

Stade international Sylvie Becaert: Inside the "Monaco of Biathlon"!

The Grand-Bornand international biathlon stadium is, first and foremost, a name. The name of Sylvie Becaert, the great champion of the 2000s, daughter of Grand-Bornand and flagship of the resort’s athletes. It was her name that was logically given to the stadium that hosts the World Cup and was tested in March 2011 for the IBU Cup finals.
The stadium is the only venue in France to have been awarded an A license by the international federation (IBU), and meets all international standards, with a 30-target shooting range, penalty ring, open and compact cross-country ski trails, start and finish area, and public areas.
Beyond its technical features, the Sylvie Becaert stadium is unique on the world circuit thanks to its temporary concept and proximity to the village, making it a kind of “Monaco circuit” for biathlon.
Fully integrated into the majestic Aravis landscape and close to the public, it has been designed with respect for the environment.

A brief history of biathlon...

Long before it became a crowd-pleasing Olympic sport, biathlon was certainly one of the most ancient activities of the men of the Far North… who, to hunt, travelled on skis with a bow on their backs. Traces of these skier-archers can even be found in Scandinavian mythology. Over the centuries, the practice developed, both for warlike purposes and for hunting. In 1924, during the first Winter Olympics in Chamonix, a Nordic patrol demonstration was organized, but until the end of the Second World War, biathlon remained an exclusively military sport…
